Three interesting quotes, talking about visions of a future where man becomes reliant on the web. But it's the last line of the last one that caught my attention';
At that stage the machines will be in effective control. People won't be able to just turn the machines off, because they will be so dependent on them that turning them off would amount to suicide.” -Theodore Kaczynski
I don't think it would be realistically possible to turn off the internet today; too many networked devices, too many ways that they could connect (and obviously a lot of investment has gone into making sure that the systems won't stop.)
But the idea that we one day might not be able to switch off ourselves is interesting. At what point would I become as reliant on the internet for essential information as I am on my mobile phone for remembering everyone's numbers?
Maybe more importantly– would I notice when it happened?
