In September 2008, I wrote about some 3DTV technology I had seen, and the impact I thought it would have on the production side of things. My expectation was that it would be a couple of years before 3DTV sets were really available to the mainstream, and then another wait for the content that would make the most of it.
Well, what I didn't forsee was Phillips (who appeared to be leading the "glasses-free" race) deciding that it wasn't going to be a profitable business and dropping out of the game – creating some interesting patent issues for other manufacturers wanting to move forwards with the technology. So while 3D sets are appearing, development has been even slower than I had expected. (And I still haven't really seen any 3D content that I wouldn't just as happily watch in 2D.)
But I mentioned that I was waiting for Star Wars in 3D, and that I "don't think it will appear this side of 2012".
Well, next month, The Phantom Menace is going to be re-released in cinemas in 3D. Just on the side of 2012 that I predicted.
